Ciné Noir (Belgium)

Abandoned movie theatre in Belgium. Merely 40 years after its opening, this cinema – which specialized in more artistic films – was forced to close due to a decreasing interest in its non-mainstream programme. Between the modern concrete walls several projectors, film reels and pellicule can still be found.

Villa Chopin (Belgium)

Abandoned villa with a rich history dating back to the 18th century. Amongst the noble guests who resided in the villa over the years, one stands out: Frédéric Chopin. This Polish composer, well known for his virtuoso Nocturnes, Preludes, and Études, spent the night at the villa during one of his European tours. Today, many rooms of the villa are in a bad state of decay. The frescos in the lounge however, still remind us of the grandeur of its glorious past.

HH2 (Belgium)

The HH2 hospital dates back to the 1950s. Over the years the hospital expanded substantially; even adding a complete new wing. At a certain point, it became one of the biggest hospitals in the region with its own maternity, paediatrics departement and helicopter pad. The hospital only recently became abandoned and will be reconverted soon.

Hopital OD (Belgium)

In its heydays, this abandoned nursing home, which was built in the 1860s, had a capacity of approximately 100 beds. When the home had to close, the place was vandalized very quickly. Soon thereafter, the chapel was hermetically sealed to preserve its beauty. Recently, a reconversion-plan has been approved; the most delapidated wings have already been torn down. The central building and the chapel are awaiting reconstruction to commence.

Piscine S (Belgium)

The layout of this beautiful modernist building was based on an innovative concept: to combine different types of leisure infrastructure – in this case a swimming pool and a theatre – under the same roof. The grand staircase with a curtain wall was once the piece de résistance of this sublime architectural jewel. The ambitious plan however turned out to be less than succesfull; the pool/ theatre had to close, leaving this valuabe part of architectural heritage to decay.

Cinema MS (Belgium)

What started as a cinema with only one room, later on – after it changed hands – expanded to a four-room complex with a grand total of 850 seats. Today, after six years of abandonment, all four rooms have been cleared. Not much is left of the once cosy cinema, except for some derelict velvet cinema chairs (that scream seventies), a few film reels and an occasional movie poster in the entrance hall.

Château des Italiens (Belgium)

Built in the 17th century, this castle used to house noble families until a big factory in the region bought it. The factory, that employed many Italians, housed its staff in the château and soon the castle became known as the ‘Château des Italiens’, meaning ‘Castle of the Italians’.

The machine room (Belgium)

This machine room used to be the pounding heart of one of the largest roof tile factories in Belgium. Built in the northern part of the country during the 1920s, this factory was once considered very innovative for its époque. The large drying sheds for example were in part heated by the recuperated heat of the steam engines. Even though these drying sheds have been beautifully reconverted into offices, large parts of the factory have been demolished while others lay abandoned and collect dust – hoping that one day the necessary funds will be gathered to commence renovation.
